Hints from Hale Kokio guests

August 26, 2017

Over the years our guests at Hale Kokio have contributed to the spirit of Aloha by contributing comments, favorites and hints for exploring Kauai. Sometimes the lasting impression of the natural wonders of the island, sometimes a magnificent surprise and sometimes a note for a must do.  We thank our guests for making these available to you.

Some days were so full of activity that we found ourselves thinking that it would be great just to relax at the cottage rather than head out for dinner.  We headed to the Farmer's market in Kilauea, off Kuhio Highway, next to the Kilauea Anaina Hou Community Park (Monday) where we found great fruit and vegetables then picked up some fresh fish in Hanalei.  The reward, a quiet meal at home with full view of "our garden" .  The outdoor grill was so convenient.

The Kilauea Lighthouse, Bird Sanctuary and Lookout is a gem.  This is the northernmost place in main Hawaii and the views are breathtaking.   We stopped on the way to the parking lot for a great view of the Lighthouse.  You might want to plan a visit in the afternoon, the morning was kind of busy.

We followed the hint in the Hale Kokio welcome document and stopped at Mermaids in Kapa'a on our way from the airport. The tacos were delish! We were so excited to get to the cottage, we hesitated to stop.  It was worth the time. Cute little shop. Tables are out front so you can absorb the local charm.

Lemons, lemons, lemons....

are plentiful at Hale Kokio.  We tried the recipe for lemonade left at the cottage. It is so refreshing.  Be sure to have agave or refined sugar and lots of ice on hand.
